Gardens & grounds The extensive gardens were designed by Lancelot ''Capability'' Brown, one of the few in Ireland. They offer that charm and seclusion that one expects to find at the end of a mile long avenue. The large walled garden has a south facing aspect - and here grows and ripens a Fig tree. The garden also provides soft fruits, herbs, vegetables and cut flowers for the house. Now for the History: Castle Grove was built in 1695 by the Grove family, who came here in 1656; however, the original was burnt during the siege of Londonderry in 1690. It was here also that the famous Daniel O'Connell was introduced to the powers that be; that led to him being an elected MP at the time. Castle Grove also had a big influence in the life of General Richard Montgomery who's fame still lives on - the American War of Independence. During famine times the Groves both fed and educated all tenant families
